Ambassador of Lithuania to the Holy See presented his Credential Letters to Pope Francis

On 21 September 2017, Ambassador of Lithuania to the Holy See and to the Maltese Order, Petras Zapolskas, presented his Credential Letters to Pope Francis. At a private meeting, Pope Francis inquired about the situation and social life of Lithuanian believers and about emigration which continues to be a problem despite the economic indicators of Lithuania pointing to its positive economic development.

Pope Francis said that all the generations living in Lithuania, its older generation in particular, should help young people put down root and create a new life in their homeland. “The future belongs to the youth, but all of us should help young people find hope,” Pope Francis said. Ambassador Petras Zapolskas reiterated President Dalia Grybauskaitė’s invitation to the Holy Father to pay a visit to Lithuania.

Ambassador Zapolskas thanked the Holy Father for his care of Lithuania, mentioned a big delegation of Lithuanian believers and public sector representatives that was going to visit Vatican in November as part of commemorations of the anniversary of the Samogitian (Telšiai) Diocese. The Ambassador presented the Holy Father with his personal gift – the replica of the image of the Trakai Mother of God, the Protectress of Lithuania, in the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Trakai, told her story and highlighted her significance to Lithuania.
