Foreign Affairs Council meeting to focus on Ukraine and Middle East

On 22-23 July in Brussels, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius is attending the Foreign Affairs Council meeting and the General Affairs Council meeting.

The Foreign Affairs Council meeting on 22 July will discuss security in Ukraine, Iraq and the Middle East. The latest developments in Ukraine will be high on the agenda. The Ministers will discuss the situation after the tragic plane crash in the Donetsk region, which currently is under separatist control. They Council will also discuss the situation in the country almost one month after the signing of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement and will coordinate next steps for the EU.

In the margins of the Council, L.Linkevičius will also attend the EU-Eastern Partnership ministerial meeting.

The Ministers will also discuss the deteriorating political and security situation in Iraq, the fight against terrorism, the humanitarian situation and the movement of foreign fighters in this country.

Bearing in mind the escalating situation in the Middle East, Israel and Gaza, the Ministers will consider the EU’s possible action to achieve a truce in fighting between Israel and Hamas as soon as possible.

The General Affairs Council meeting on 23 July will take the final decision allowing Lithuania to adopt the euro as its currency as from 1 January 2015.

The Italian Presidency will present its work programme for the duration of its term of office. The Council will discuss a roadmap for the mid-term review of the Europe 2020 growth strategy and exchange views on the implementation of European Council conclusions.
