Foreign Minister introduced Lithuania‘s steps to honour memory of Holocaust victims to U.S. Jewish organizations
On 23 September in New York, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with representatives Jewish organizations - B’nai B’rith, the American Jewish Committee, the World Jewish Congress, the World Jewish Restitution Organization and others - and delivered a speech in paying tribute to the victims of the Holocaust in Lithuania.
Foreign Minister noted the successful political, economic and cultural cooperation between Lithuania and Israel. L.Linkevičius welcomed the Israeli Government’s decision to open its embassy in Vilnius in the coming year, announced by Israel’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman this during his visit to Lithuania on 10-11 September.
The meeting focused on threats arising from racism and anti-Semitism, as well as on the Middle East peace process. L.Linkevičius also informed the Jewish organizations about the decisions taken on the Paneriai Memorial reconstruction, on recognition of people who saved Jews as freedom fighters and on development of education about Holocaust in Lithuania.
When speaking about the Middle East peace process, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister drew attention to the importance of negotiations in Cairo on long-term truce.
