Foreign Ministry protests to the Republic of Belarus over violations of Lithuanian state border airspace
On 22 October, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania summoned the Chargé d'Affaires of Belarus and presented him a diplomatic note, expressing strong protest regarding the repeated and increasingly frequent violations of Lithuania's airspace by the Republic of Belarus.
On the evening of October 21, a group of meteorological balloons illegally entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus, as detected by radar systems. This posed a threat to civil aviation and public safety. The disruption of Vilnius Airport's regular operations also resulted in financial losses.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania emphasized that violations of the state border constitute a serious breach of international law. It urged the Republic of Belarus to ensure control of its airspace, reminded previous violations of the airspace of the Republic of Lithuania by the Belarusian side, demanded that they be investigated and prevented from recurring, and warned that if such illegal airspace violations continue, the Republic of Lithuania reserves the right to take appropriate retaliatory measures.
