General Affairs Council takes a final decision allowing Lithuania to adopt the euro as its currency
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius attended the General Affairs Council meeting on 23 July in Brussels, which adopted a decision allowing Lithuania to adopt the euro as its currency as from 1 January 2015.
“The positive decision allowing Lithuania to adopt the euro as its currency as from 2015 acknowledges Lithuania’s effort and abilities necessary for ensuring sound management of public finances and creating the conditions for sustainable economic growth. The decision opens up more opportunities for the citizens of Lithuania and other member states as well as for businesses. Lithuania’s membership of the club of the strongest EU member states provides an additional guarantee of security and stability,” the Lithuanian Foreign Minister said.
The Italian Presidency presented its work programme for the duration of its term of office. The Council discussed a roadmap for the mid-term review of the Europe 2020 growth strategy and exchanged views on the implementation of European Council conclusions.
L.Linkevičius welcomed the priorities of the Italian Presidency, which continues the efforts of the previous EU Trio Presidency to promote economic growth, job creation, competitiveness, innovation and to deepen the single market. However, the Lithuanian Foreign Minister called for greater attention to the Eastern Partnership and energy.
“We would like to see more emphasis on the Eastern Partnership and energy security in the Italian Presidency’s agenda. Lithuania believes that namely these issues need immediate attention in the current situation,” said the Lithuanian Foreign Minister.
