L. Linkevičius meets with WTO Director-General
On 24 February, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the Director-General of the World Trade Organization Roberto Azevêdo. Lithuania’s Foreign Minister stressed the need to update the world trade rules and to adapt them to the modern world.
L. Linkevičius voiced Lithuania’s support for the multilateral trading system and hoped that the upcoming 12th WTO Ministerial Conference would provide a great opportunity not only to conclude fisheries subsidies negotiations, but also to consolidate the good progress achieved on issues of importance for Lithuanian businesses.
“The WTO must ensure a level playing field for all, especially when establishing multilateral disciplines on the use of subsidies. The WTO must also take into account technological progress and create rules on e-commerce,” said L. Linkevičius.
The meeting also discussed the WTO technical assistance projects to support the implementation of the world trade rules. Lithuania not only actively participates in such projects in the Eastern Partnership countries, but also contributes to the WTO activities in this area.
