L.Linkevičius to attend EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels
On 19 January in Brussels, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius will attend the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council. The meeting will focus on such key issues, as relations with Russia, the fight against terrorism, the situation in Libya and climate change.
The Ministers will discuss the EU-Russia relations and their future prospects. L.Linkevičius will brief his counterparts on the document on the EU’s communication strategy to counter the Russian propaganda campaign. The document has been initiated by Lithuania and signed by four countries (Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark and the United Kingdom). It calls on EU institutions and EU Member States to take concrete action against Russian propaganda and includes specific proposals.
The Ministers will also discuss the fight against terrorism in the light of the last week’s terrorist attacks in France, the security and political situation in Libya. They will also discuss diplomatic efforts to tackle climate change with a view to sign a universal binding climate change agreement at the UN Climate Change Conference in December 2015 in Paris.
At the Council, the EU Foreign Ministers will exchange views on the Middle East peace process, challenges in Iraq and Syria with Nabil Elaraby, the Secretary General of the League of Arab States.
