L.Linkevičius to attend NATO Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Brussels

Head of Lithuania’s diplomacy Linas Linkevičius is taking part in the Meeting of the North Atlantic Council at the level of Foreign Ministers on 24 and 25 June in Brussels. The Foreign Ministers will discuss relations with Russia, the crisis in Ukraine, measures to enhance security in Central and Eastern Europe and other important issues in the run-up to the NATO summit on 4-5 September in Wales.

L.Linkevičius will meet with the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), General Philip Breedlove, U.S. Air Force to discuss topical security issues in Lithuania.

The conversation will focus on ongoing exercises in the region, support for the defence of the allies, changes in security situation in the region and Lithuania’s commitment to increase defence spending to reach 2 percent of GDP by 2020.

In Brussels, the Foreign Ministers will also evaluate the current progress of countries seeking NATO membership and their prospects of further integration. The agenda also includes sessions on further cooperation with alliance partners and NATO’s role in ensuring security in Afghanistan after the presidential elections of 14 June.

The NATO summit to be hosted by the United Kingdom on 4-5 September in Wales will provide an opportunity for Heads of State and Government of member countries to discuss NATO’s future development and to review relations with Russia in the Ukrainian context, peacekeeping in Afghanistan, other strategic issues and will adopt the Transatlantic Declaration. The President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė will be representing Lithuania at the summit. NATO summit meetings traditionally are held every two years. The most recent one took place in Chicago, United States, on 20-21 May 2012.
