Landsbergis met with Sandu: "There is no alternative to EU enlargement and Moldova's European integration"
On 17 September, while continuing his visit to Moldova, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, together with the Foreign Ministers of France, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, and Poland, met with the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, with whom they discussed the situation in the country, Moldova's aspirations for EU membership and implemented reforms.
"Lithuania has always been a strong supporter of Moldova's EU accession aspirations and will do so while taking its every next step. Further enlargement of the EU is, according to the President of the European Commission, a geopolitical imperative, which is further exacerbated by Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and the security threats it poses to our neighbourhood. We, the EU, must learn to act strategically and quickly. There is no alternative to the EU's enlargement and European integration of countries seeking accession to the EU, including Moldova,” said Landsbergis.
Landsbergis stressed that after opening the EU accession negotiations, there was still a long and challenging road ahead, so it was important not to lose the momentum of reforms.
As Russia continues its war against Ukraine, and Moldova's presidential election and the referendum on EU membership are approaching, Russia is spreading disinformation and propaganda in Moldova. It is also using other means to sabotage the country’s further European integration. Thus, according to Landsbergis, having successfully implemented the relevant reforms, established an exemplary National Crisis Management Centre and accumulated a lot of helpful experience, Lithuania is ready to share its expertise with Moldova.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis is visiting Moldova on 16-17 September. The Foreign Minister will attend the ministerial conference of the Moldova Partnership Platform to discuss Moldova’s progress in implementing reforms, support needs and Lithuania’s support.
