Linkevičius and Ambassadors of EU member countries to Lithuania discuss important EU issues
On 2 March, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with Ambassadors of EU member countries and candidate countries. The meeting focused on the next Foreign Affairs Council to be held on 6 March and the most important issues related to the EU’s regional security and international policy.
The head of Lithuania’s Foreign Minister stressed that when aiming at maintaining a strong transatlantic link, we must respect our commitment to defence, seek NATO effectiveness not only of implementing Article 5, but also of ensuring capacities needed for addressing contemporary threats.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister underscored the importance of implementing the EU’s commitment to Ukraine and the assessment of the country’s progress despite its still difficult endeavours to combat corruption. As regards the security situation in Ukraine, especially on its border, Linkevičius highlighted Russia’s role in the implementation of the Minsk agreements and the EU-Russia relationship that must be based on the five principles, which had been previously agreed upon.
Linkevičius and the Ambassadors also discussed issues related to the Astravets nuclear power plant and called on them to devote due attention to these issues at the international level.
