Linkevičius gives Pažaislis monastery copy of unique book by camaldolese monks as present

On 6 April, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Mikheil Janelidze, who came to Lithuania on an official visit, are visiting Pažaislis monastery. During the visit, Minister Linkevičius gave a copy of the unique capitula of the Pažaislis camaldolese monks dating back to the 18th century to the sisters of St. Casimir as a present.

“Lithuania and Georgia maintain not only strong friendship, mutual respect, but also centuries-long historical ties. Today, Lithuania and Georgia once again cement their friendship, cultural and historical bridges between our two nations,” said Minister Linkevičius.

“It is not widely known that the unique manuscripts from the 18th century that tell the story of Pažaislis monastery were preserved in Georgia. I am pleased to have the opportunity to give this copy of the manuscripts to Pažaislis monastery and Kaunas County Archives as a present. From now on, these unique historical documents will be made available to the academic community and the general public,” said the Minister.

Georgia’s Foreign Minister Janelidze expressed gladness at the opportunity to visit the unique and famous monastery in Pažaislis, especially because the Patriarch of Georgia had contributed to fostering its historical heritage.

The manuscripts that tell the unique part of Lithuania’s cultural history and monastic culture during the first half of the 18th century were preserved by the Patriarch Kiryon II of Georgia, who saved them when retreating from Lithuania during the early years of the 20th century.

The manuscripts were digitised on the initiative of the historian Mindaugas Paknys and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Linkevičius also gave a collection of Lithuanian history books to the library of Pažaislis monastery, which is being restored, as a present.

During the visit to Pažaislis monastery, the Foreign Ministers also met with representatives of the local authorities and academic community of Kaunas.
