Lithuania contributes to the initiative of the revival of Mosul

Permanent Delegate of Lithuania to UNESCO, Ambassador Irena Vaišvilaitė, informed Lazare Eloundou Assomo, Deputy Director of the World Heritage Centre, in Paris on 17 December, that Lithuania is joining the international initiative aimed at the reconstruction and recovery of the Iraqi city of Mosul.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania allocated ten thousand euros from its development cooperation and humanitarian aid funds for the purpose. “We believe that this contribution will help to revive the city which was famous for its multicultural environment and intellectual atmosphere,” the Ambassador said.

On 10 September, the UNESCO headquarters hosted the international conference “Revive the Spirit of Mosul” where the countries presented their projects under implementation there and mentioned the funds allocated to that end. A necessity to restore the pluralistic identity of Mosul that had been overshadowed by the terrorist occupation in 2014–2017 was emphasised. The priorities of the initiative are as follows: reconstructing heritage sites, reviving its educational institutions and cultural life.
