Lithuania hopes for balanced outcomes of WTO Ministerial Conference

The EU’s Foreign Affairs Council on trade issues on 15 December prepared for the WTO's 10th Ministerial Conference. Today, in Nairobi, Kenya, trade ministers from around the world begin to discuss further priorities for world trade negotiations and will seek to make decisions on the organization’s activities.

The EU Trade Ministers adopted conclusions setting out the EU’s position for the WTO's 10th Ministerial Conference regarding export competition, transparency and aspects related to development.

The EU’s Foreign Affairs Council meeting was attended by the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Raimundas Karoblis. According to him, it is important for Lithuania that such a package of decisions should be properly balanced.

“What we hope to accomplish is equal attention to all types of export support for various countries, which distort world trade. We also hope that decisions made on preferential rules for developing countries will not essentially distort current trade rules and that this conference will facilitate the creation of new trade rules, which are necessary for modern business,” said the Vice-Minister.

The Council will also discuss other possible results of this conference, such as the revised Information Technology Agreement.
