LITHUANIA SPEAKS UP FOR THE CREATION OF EFFECTIVE HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL
On 14 March Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaroslav Neverovič participated in the 4th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. He made a statement that there was a need to create an efficient Human Rights Council and highlighted the States’ responsibility to implement the decisions of the Council.
“While the Human Rights Council goes through the institution building process it should not leave pressing human rights issues outside of its attention,” said Vice-Minister J.Neverovič.
Lithuanian representative also encouraged the States to pay more attention to the implementation of their commitments undertaken when presenting candidatures for election to the Council.
The United Nations Human Rights Council was established in June, 2006, in replacement of the Commission on Human Rights. The Council is the main body of the United Nations promoting and protecting human rights.
The Council is comprised of 47 Member States. Lithuania is not a Member State of the Council. The 4th Session of the Human Rights Council is taking place from 12 to 30 March.
