Lithuanian Ambassador presents his letters of credence to OSCE Secretary General
On 2 May, the new Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Aurimas Taurantas presented his letters of credence to Lamberto Zannier, OSCE Secretary General.
During the meeting, Taurantas stressed the importance for Lithuania of the OSCE – the first international organization joined by Lithuania after the restoration of the country’s independence in 1991.
“Also today this organization carries out especially important tasks, including ensuring respect for human rights and fundamental values throughout the OSCE region, the protection of the rights of national minorities, as well as looking for ways to resolve frozen conflicts. Its role has become increasingly important after Russia caused a military conflict in eastern Ukraine and the organisation established the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (SMM),” said Taurantas.
The meeting discussed cooperation between Lithuania and the OSCE, Lithuania’s participation in the implementation of the OSCE projects, firstly, the provision of support for activities in Ukraine, promoting the safety of journalists and the fight against propaganda. The interlocutors also discussed the ongoing elections of the OSCE Secretary General, the Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, the High Commissioner on National Minorities, and the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media.
