Lithuanian and Irish diplomats discuss bilateral relations, EU agenda, support for Ukraine

On 26 November  in Vilnius, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigitas Mitkus welcomed the Irish Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence Thomas Byrne with a delegation.

During the political consultations, Lithuanian and Irish diplomats discussed the current issues of bilateral cooperation and the main items on the EU agenda, including the Multiannual Financial Framework, the importance of strengthening European competitiveness, EU enlargement, preparations for the Presidency of the Council of the EU (Ireland will hold the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026, and Lithuania Lithuania will hold it in the first half of 2027) and the planned priorities of the countries during the Presidencies.

The consultations focused on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, sanctions policy, Russia’s responsibility and reparation mechanisms. Both sides underlined their strong support for Ukraine, their close cooperation in implementing joint projects and their potential for development.

During the visit, the Minister of State Byrne, together with the Vice-Minister Mitkus, visited the Museum of Lithuanian Occupations and Freedom Fights (KGB), where the historical memory of Lithuania and Europe as a whole was discussed.
