Lithuanian Foreign Minister offers condolences over the passing away of the Honorary Chairman of the Lithuanian Jewish Community Simonas Alperavičius

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius offers sincere condolences to the Lithuanian Jewish Community, Litvaks living in Israel and other countries, and to those affected by the loss of the Honorary Chairman of the Lithuanian Jewish Community Simonas Alperavičius.

L.Linkevičius said:

“Simonas Alperavičius was a noble-minded man. From the very re-establishment of the Lithuanian Jewish Community in 1989, he contributed significantly to the recovery of Jewish education and culture in Lithuania, to peaceful cohabitation of Lithuanians and Jews, and to the creation of a responsible civil society in Lithuania. Wise, sincere and authoritative words of S.Alperavičius have helped to solve many historically inherited and important issues facing the State, contributed to the successful advancement of relations between Lithuania and Israel, the promotion of values of democracy, respect for human rights and freedoms, enhancement of the international standing of the restored Republic of Lithuania. The Lithuanian diplomatic service will continue to preserve and honour the memory of S.Alperavičius.”

S.Alperavičius was decorated for his dedicated work with the Cross of the Knight of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas, a memorial badge on the occasion of Lithuania’s invitation to NATO, and an honorary sign for merits of the Department of National Minorities and Lithuanians Living Abroad.

In 2013, S.Alperavičius received the award of honour of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Lithuanian Diplomacy Star – for the advancement of bilateral relations between the Republic of Lithuania and the State of Israel, as well as the promotion of democratic values.
