Lithuanian Foreign Vice-Minister urges U.S.A. to remain Lithuania’s active ally in dealing with energy and economic security

On 1-3 October, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Rolandas Kriščiūnas paid an official visit to the United States of America, and called on the U.S.A. to remain an active ally in dealing with issues related to energy and economic security.

Lithuanian Vice-Minister met with Michael Carpenter, Special Advisor to the Vice President Joe Biden, Mary Warlick, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Energy Resources, the Ambassador João Vale de Almeida, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the United States, high-ranking officials of the U.S. Department of State, Department of Energy, and Department of Commerce.

“Homework done by Lithuania show that the country is ready to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and expects a positive decision in 2015,“ said Rolandas Kriščiūnas in the meeting with the leadership of the OECD Washington Centre.

The meetings also discussed bilateral relations between Lithuania and the U.S.A., including regional security issues, trade, the U.S. investment in Lithuania, the EU-U.S. talks on a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).

The Lithuanian Foreign Vice-Minister informed the U.S. Government officials about the official opening of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Klaipėda later this month, stressed the significance of the U.S. political support for the implementation of projects important for Lithuania‘s energy security, and reiterated Lithuania’s goal of receiving an approval of the United States to export North American shale gas to Europe.

During a forum at the Centre for European Policy Analysis, Vice Minister Kriščiūnas presented Lithuania’s energy security challenges.
