LITHUANIAN MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS CONFIRMS SUPPORT FOR THE ANTITERRORIST ACTIONS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania Antanas Valionis in his letter addressed to Colin L. Powell, Secretary of State of the United States of America, has assured the USA once again that Lithuania is ready to extend political, diplomatic and practical support for the United States in fight against terrorism. The letter indicates that Lithuanian Government has already granted permanent diplomatic clearance for the overflight of the aircraft of the United States in the air-space of Lithuania. Currently the National Action Program on combating terrorism is being prepared as well as trilateral Baltic cooperation on developing joint measures in response of terrorist attacks against the United States is being intensified. As a partner and firm ally of the United States Lithuania is ready to take all the necessary means in addressing global challenges, the letter says. Recalling the vision of President Bush enunciated in his Warsaw speech and seeking to advance the goals of the U.S.-Baltic Charter, Lithuania is ready to share thoughts on ways the Baltic states could contribute to the implementation of this vision through developing cooperation with Russia. Lithuania is determined to work on the basis of our successful cooperation with Kaliningrad region and together with Latvia and Estonia to develop further cross-border cooperation with Russia, the letter says. Minister Valionis expressed his confidence that Lithuania’s integration into the North Atlantic Alliance would highly contribute to and enhance constructive and stable relations with Russia.
