Lithuanian Permanent Representative in Vienna presents his letters of credence to the IAEA Director General

On 3 May, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Aurimas Taurantas presented his letters of credence to the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano.

After the ceremony, Taurantas held a meeting with Amano and discussed cooperation between Lithuania and the IAEA on nuclear safety and security.

Taurantas expressed Lithuania’s great concern about serious violations of nuclear safety regulations when constructing the Atravets nuclear power plant (NPP). According to the Ambassador, Lithuania lacks the necessary transparency and good-willing information exchange, while Belarus is developing this project. The Ambassador called on the IAEA for continued attention to the Astravets NPP, because nuclear safety is a matter of concern for and a responsibility of the entire international community.

Amano noted that also the IAEA called on countries constructing nuclear power plants to become more transparent, to invite IAEA missions, as well as to provide information and to cooperate with the neighbours.

The meeting also discussed Lithuania’s plans for the closure of Ignalina NPP, issues related to the nuclear program of Iran, the situation in North Korea, the IAEA’s budget, and other important items on the organization’s agenda.
