Lithuania's Foreign Minister and Israeli President honoured the Holocaust victims at the Paneriai Memorial
Yesterday, on 4 August, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys, together with the Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who is on an official visit to Lithuania, visited the Paneriai Memorial, where they observed a minute of silence and laid flowers in memory of the Holocaust victims killed during World War II.
"Tens of thousands of innocent lives, mostly of fellow Lithuanian Jews, were ended in the most brutal way in Paneriai. Today, by standing here, we are sending a clear message: we must preserve the memory so that such tragedies never happen again," said Minister Budrys.
Paneriai is a site of the second-deadliest mass shooting of Jews in Eastern Europe after Babyn Yar in Ukraine. During the worst tragedy of the 20th century, the Holocaust, the Nazis and their collaborators killed 6 million Jews. The majority of the Lithuanian local Jewish community was murdered.
