Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis travels to Ukraine, calls on his EU and NATO to make the pilgrimage of peace

Today, on 15 February, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis sent a letter to the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the European Union and NATO member states in order to mobilise support for Ukraine, which stands on the brink of war.

Landsbergis called on his counterparts to organise a series of high-level visits to Ukraine.

“All that happened because of Ukraine's choice. Ukraine has chosen the European and euro-Atlantic path. It is our common responsibility to support Ukraine's sovereign choice and its right to live free from the threat of Russia's attacks. What matters the most right now is a clear demonstration that we stand with Ukraine- morally, politically, and also literally. That is, I suggest that all of us, EU and NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs, plan coordinated visits to Ukraine in the coming days and weeks," Lithuania’s Foreign Minister writes.

Landsbergis will be visiting Ukraine on 24 and 25 February. In his letter to the EU and NATO partners, Landsbergis also points out other important areas of action in support of Ukraine: to help Ukraine by supplying weaponry so that they can defend themselves; to impose swift, resolute, and overpowering EU sanctions in response to Russia's aggressive actions; and to provide further financial support to make sure that Ukraine's economy survives this most challenging of times.

“What is at stake is not just the fate of Ukraine. The security of the whole European continent and the future of the rules-based international order is at stake,” Landsbergis said. “We have no right to allow a repetition of the tragedies of the mid-20th century in the new millennium due to our inaction and lack of resolve,” the Foreign Minister writes.
