Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis bids farewell to Romania’s outgoing Ambassador

On 5 May, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the outgoing Ambassador of Romania to Lithuania Cosmin Dinescu.

During the meeting, both sides welcomed the excellent bilateral relations that had gained new dynamics and quality over the past few years. The Foreign Minister thanked the Ambassador for his active engagement in developing bilateral ties, particularly in strengthening cooperation on strategically important issues. “I am extremely pleased that, in the context of the huge challenges facing European and global democratic communities and the international rules-based order, our countries have maintained excellent cooperation and qualitatively re-discovered each other on a strategic level,” Landsbergis said.

When discussing international issues, Landsbergis stressed that in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine, it was necessary to strengthen further the foreward defence potential on NATO’s eastern flank and bilateral cooperation. At the same time, he thanked Romania for the decision to resume NATO’s Air Policing Mission at Šiauliai from the beginning of this April.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister congratulated Dinescu on assuming the new position as the Head of the European Union Partnership Mission in Moldova (EUPM Moldova) on 24 April. “We welcome the launch by the EU of this strategic mission in a country that has chosen the path of Euro-Atlantic integration and faces many great challenges. We look forward to cooperating closely with the mission, sparing no effort to help Moldova strengthen its resilience to emerging external and internal threats and resolutely implement reforms in pursuit of the Euro-Atlantic objectives. We are ready to help the EU civilian mission through our activities as much as we can”, said Landsbergis.

At the meeting, Landsbergis once again reiterated Lithuania’s strong support for Romania’s aspirations to join the Schengen area as soon as possible and to negotiate the OECD membership.

Dinescu has represented Romania in Lithuania and Latvia since September 2019.
