Lithuania's Foreign Minister Landsbergis extends condolences on the passing of the first Ukrainian President Leonid Kravchuk
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis extends his sincere condolences on the passing of the first President of independent Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk.
“My heartfelt condolences go out to the family, relatives and the people of Ukraine, who are heroically defending the freedom of their own country and of ours. The place of the first President of independent Ukraine, who laid the foundations for an independent country and sought to build a democratic state of Ukraine, can never be filled, and the loss of another historical personality that contributed to the collapse of the Soviet Empire will be with us forever,” Landsbergis said.
In December 1991, the prominent politician was elected Ukraine's first President and, together with the then Russian and Belarusian leaders, declared that the Soviet Union had ceased to exist.
