Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Landsbergis to attend the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council
On 22 April, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gabrielius Landsbergis of Lithuania, will attend the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg to discuss Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and Sudan.
EU foreign ministers and EU defence ministers will discuss the situation on the Ukrainian front and the EU’s security commitments to Ukraine, including military support. Discussions will also take place on the use of frozen and mobilised Russian assets for Ukraine’s needs and on new sanctions. During the debate, Ukraine’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, will informally exchange views with Ukraine’s Minister for Defence, Rustem Umerov, via VTC.
Foreign ministers will discuss developments in the Middle East, including the de-escalation of the situation in the region, regional security, and the tightening of sanctions against Iran. They will also discuss the humanitarian situation in the region and the possibility of restarting the Middle East peace process.
The Council will exchange views on the latest developments in Sudan, which has been in conflict since April 2023. Ministers will discuss the outcome of the International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and its Neighbours and the EU’s follow-up to the ongoing crisis. The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres’ Personal Envoy for Sudan, Lamamra, and the European Union Special Representative (EUSR) for the Horn of Africa, Weber, will participate in the discussion remotely.
