Lithuania’s Foreign Minister participates in a campaign to preserve historical memory on the Day of Mourning and Hope

On 14 June, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius participated in a campaign to preserve historical memory “Say, Hear, Keep Alive”, which was initiated under the Mission Siberia project.

The 24-hour reading of names of people, who were exiled to Siberia, is taking place near the Monument to the Soviet Occupation Victims in Vilnius.

The mass deportation of Lithuanian citizens began on 14 June 1941, 75 years ago. During the period of the Soviet occupation, more than 120,000 people were deported to Siberia.

The 24-hour reading will end at 10.00 a.m. on 15 February. The list consists of more than 22,000 names and surnames. The destiny of these people will also be mentioned.

Their names are read out loud by members of Mission Siberia, Scouts, representatives of youth organizations, and riflemen. Every Lithuanian citizen is invited to join the campaign. The President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė began to read the names. Some employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania are also taking part in the campaign.

On the same day, on the occasion of the Days of Mourning and Hope, Occupation and Genocide, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister attended a commemorative event at the Seimas (Parliament), as well as a ceremony of hoisting the state flag at the Independence Square.
