Minister Budrys met with European Commissioner Kubilius

On 15 December in Brussels, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys met with European Commission (EC) member Andrius Kubilius, who serves as Commissioner for Defense and Space.

In the meeting, Budrys stated that given the complex security situation in Europe and its neighbourhood, the main priority of the new EC should be strengthening Europe’s defence capabilities. According to the head of Lithuanian diplomacy, EU member states must increase defence spending more rapidly and aim for at least 3% of GDP, while the EU defence industry should operate at full capacity.

“The current security situation does not afford the European Union the luxury of delay. By defending freedom and democracy with their blood, Ukrainians are buying us time, but it is not infinite – the clock is ticking. Europe’s safety depends on the EU’s willingness to invest in defence,” said Budrys.

The minister emphasized that the portfolio assigned to Commissioner Kubilius provides real opportunities to elevate the EU defence industry to a new level and expressed hope that Lithuania’s example and leadership will contribute to this.
