Minister Budrys: Our diaspora has consistently held and will continue to hold a special place in Lithuania

Today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kęstutis Budrys, awarded "For Diaspora Merits to Lithuania" Honour Award medals to the laureates, who have come to visit, have returned and currently reside in Lithuania.

"Our diaspora has consistently held and will continue to hold a special place in Lithuania. Historically, the Lithuanian diaspora served as a refuge for our aspirations for freedom and independence, maintaining Lithuanian identity during the occupation. It was our link to the world, a source of knowledge and experience that helped us build an independent Lithuania. Today, Lithuanians abroad actively participate in the life of Lithuania, build Lithuanian Heritage schools, promote cultural, artistic, and sports projects, and engage in civic initiatives. You are a proof that geographical borders mean nothing when it comes to community, respect, and love for the Homeland," Budrys said when congratulating the laureates.

Honour Award "For Diaspora Merits to Lithuania "The Medal is awarded twice a year on the occasion of the World Lithuanian Unity Day (17 July) and the Lithuanian Heritage School Day (10 August).

The medals are awarded to representatives of the Lithuanian diaspora in recognition of their special merits in fostering Lithuanian identity and encouraging Lithuanians living abroad to get involved in homeland life and contribute to its prosperity.

On the occasion of Lithuanian Heritage School Day, awards will be presented during a ceremony at the Office of the President of the Republic of Lithuania. The event is sponsored by First Lady Diana Nausėdienė.
