Minister L. Linkevičius emphasised significance of Baltic Way to present-day Europe

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius, speaking at the conference commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Baltic Way, noted the significance of the spirit of solidarity and fight for freedom of the Baltic Way to the present-day Europe.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania, and the Foundations of Jerzy Giedroyc and Bronislaw Geremek organized the conference in Vilnius on 21 August which also commemorates the 25th anniversary of the first free elections in Poland and the Fall of the Berlin Wall.

“The Baltic Way was the act of courage. That was the message to others that we shall never change the course from our road. At the same time it was a sign of unity. The Baltic Way is our personal experience therefore we reacted to the events in Georgia and to the current situation in Ukraine much more sensitively and sympathetically. History is written not only for its lovers. It is also written so that we should learn its lessons, so that we should build bridges through the present to the future”, said Linas Linkevičius.

Politicians, journalists, intellectuals from Lithuania, Poland, Latvia and Estonia are taking part in the event in Vilnius.
