NATIONAL NATO INTEGRATION PROGRAMME FOR 2002 PRESENTED

On September 17, the Lithuanian Coordination Commission for the Integration into NATO approved a preparation programme for membership in the Alliance. The new programme brings Lithuania into the third cycle of NATO bid, which is of vital importance before the 2002 NATO summit in Prague. During the meeting, members of the Commission presented their proposals and comments regarding Lithuania's obligations to carry out certain tasks in all five chapters of the Membership Action Plan (MAP). The political [first] section of the programme reflects Lithuania's position regarding the terrorist attacks in the United States. Expressing support to the application of Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, Lithuania will have to specify the capacities it is ready to provide for fighting terrorism. On September 26, the Government will discuss the national NATO integration programme for 2002, whose implementation is considered by the Government as a strategic goal.
