NATO Summit to strengthen defence measures in Alliance’s eastern members
The NATO Summit 2014 in Wales, the United Kingdom, to begin on 4 September. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius together with the Minister of National Defence will be attending the Summit as part of the delegation led by President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė.
NATO leaders will discuss Russian aggression in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East and North Africa, also will make important decisions on ensuring security of the Allies, and will solemnly mark the completion of ISAF’s mission in Afghanistan.
“The Summit in Wales is taking place at the crucial time for Europe’s security when Russia carries out aggression against Ukraine, grossly violating international obligations and threatening peace in Europe,” said the Foreign Minister in highlighting the relevance of the Summit.
According to L.Linkevičius, the NATO Summit will review Alliance’s readiness to respond to security challenges arising from Russian aggression. The Allies also intended to express their firm support for Ukraine.
“We will seek to approve measures aimed at guaranteeing the Allies’ long-term presence in Lithuania, as well as in other NATO’s eastern members. The Alliance’s commitment to collective defence has to be visible, with appropriate capabilities and measures to deter potential threats,” added L.Linkevičius.
Other decisions to be taken at the Summit include a substantive package of practical measures for Georgia that will help the country to seek NATO membership, and new initiatives to strengthen cooperation with partners, such as the development of defence capabilities and the establishment of an interoperability platform with partners, readiness to respond to energy and cyber security threats.
In Wales, the NATO leaders plan to adopt a Transatlantic Declaration in which North American and European Allies will reaffirm their commitment to deepen their mutual cooperation. The areas of cooperation include, speedy creation of an area of free trade, and trade liberalization for LNG.
The last NATO Summit was held in Chicago two years ago.
