NATO’s new Supreme Allied Commander assures Linkevičius of deployment of Allied forces
On 20 May in Brussels, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with Curtis Scaparrotti, NATO’s new Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR). During the meeting, the officials discussed plans for deployment of rotational NATO forces to Eastern Europe. The General assured Lithuania’s Foreign Minister that he saw the plans to deploy the Allied forces to the region as his paramount task.
Scaparrotti welcomed Lithuania’s commitment to increase funding for national defence, to further strengthen national defence capabilities and thanked Lithuania for supporting as a host country the deployed U.S. and NATO’s forces as well as for the military exercise in our country.
Linkevičius voiced his support for giving NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander a greater mandate to use NATO forces in crisis situations.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister also invited General Scaparrotti to visit Lithuania.
