Nordic and Baltic experts’ meeting focuses on Afghanistan

The Nordic Baltic Eight (NB8) experts’ meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania on 5 November focused on the situation in Afghanistan and cooperation perspectives.

The participants discussed the situation in Afghanistan and country‘s key political processes - the results of Afghanistan’s presidential election, forming the new government of national unity, the reconciliation process, cooperation between NATO and Afghanistan after 2014, as well as issues related to regional cooperation.

The meeting also offered an opportunity to share experience in the field of development cooperation with Afghanistan, to explore possibilities and forms of support for Afghanistan and the country’s basic needs, including support to law enforcement, exchange plans for bilateral cooperation. The experts also discussed the Resolute Support mission aimed to strengthen the capacity of Afghanistan’s security forces, the countries’ planned assistance in this field and further perspectives of diplomatic representation of the NB8 countries in Afghanistan.

The event was also attended by representatives of Lithuania’s Special Mission to Afghanistan, the EU Police Mission in Afghanistan and the Ministry of National Defense.

In 2006-2013, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania financed 226 projects in Afghanistan, worth 18.2 million litas, under the Development Cooperation and Democracy Promotion Programme.
