POLITICAL DIRECTORS’ MEETING IN ATHENS FOCUSES ON EUROPEAN FOREIGN AND SECURITY POLICY ISSUES

On 13-14 January in Athens, the Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Ambassador Dalius Čekuolis took part in an informal meeting of political directors of the EU Foreign Ministries. The meeting discussed the key issues facing European foreign policy.

The meeting discussed important issues related to the southern neighbourhood, the E3/EU +3 nuclear negotiations with Iran, the situation in southern Sudan, the Middle East peace process, and the fight against terrorism. The EU Counter Terrorism Coordinator Gilles de Kerchove attended the latter discussion.

The Political Directors and the EU Special Representative in Afghanistan Franz-Michael Mellbin discussed the situation in Afghanistan, the EU’s commitments to the country, future prospects, and possible changes in 2014 and beyond.

The Political Directors also discussed priorities for the EU’s foreign policy in the first semester of 2014 and exchanged opinions on the situation in eastern partner countries. Special attention was paid to the events in Ukraine.
