Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania on illegal detention of the kidnapped Estonian official Eston Kohver in Russia
The Foreign Ministry of Lithuania urges the Russian Federation to release immediately the official Eston Kohver detained in the territory of Estonia on 5 September and provide him with the possibility to safely return to his Motherland. We consider accusations of spying made against Eston Kohver politically motivated. We express solidarity with our ally Estonia, Kohver’s family members and all the people of Estonia.
This severe provocation with respect to Estonia when the Estonian state border was violated, its territory was invaded and the official then on duty was kidnapped using weapons and force, and taken to the Russian Federation must be investigated without delay and thoroughly, and the persons responsible for this provocation must be held accountable.
We regret that diplomatic efforts to liberate Eston Kohver from illegal detention in the Russian Federation have not given any results thus far. We urge the authorities of the Russian Federation to take immediate concrete steps to release the official.
