Statement on Russia's failure to comply with the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty
We appreciate the efforts the United States have undertaken to engage Russia with a view to preserving the INF treaty.
In spite of such efforts, Russia failed to take demonstrable steps towards returning to full and verifiable compliance and remains in material breach of its obligations under the INF Treaty.
A treaty can only work if both signatories continue to fulfil their respective obligations. It is highly unfortunate that in its efforts aimed at obtaining strategic dominance, Russia is undermining the credibility of arms control system and weakening existing security architecture.
Therefore, as stated by NATO earlier today, we, the Allies, support the United States in its decision to suspend its obligations and to provide the requisite six-month written notice of its withdrawal under article XV of the INF Treaty.
Together with our Allies, we shall be reviewing the security implications of Russian intermediate-range missiles on NATO’s defensive posture, and will continue to work together to ensure the credibility and effectiveness of the Alliance’s ability to defend and deter.
Lithuania remains committed to the preservation of international effective arms control, disarmament and nonproliferation regimes.
