On May 18, UNESCO proclaimed the first Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, which were recommended by the International Jury of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The proclaimed masterpieces include the Lithuanian cross-making tradition.
Prepared by the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture and the Centre of the Lithuanian National Culture and presented by the Lithuanian Permanent Mission to UNESCO, the cross-making tradition was recognized as a world intangible art masterpiece.
Lithuanian permanent representative at UNESCO, Ambassador Ugnė Karvelis, is also taking part in the activity of the International Jury of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, including 18 well-known persons. During the first session of the Jury 19 nominations were proclaimed masterpieces out of 60 planned and 32 examined nominations. The proclamation will be made every two years in future.
The cross-making tradition, which comes from the customs and belief of the Lithuanian ancestors, has become a universally recognized and fostered phenomenon.
