United Nations Security Council unanimously approved a resolution to boost humanitarian aid access in Syria

On 22 February, the United Nations Security Council unanimously approved a resolution to boost humanitarian aid access in Syria. Lithuania has co-authored this resolution.

After a vote at the United Nations Security Council, Lithuania’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Raimonda Murmokaitė expressed hope that the resolution would help to change the situation in Syria and stressed the need to guarantee accountability for crimes against humanity and violations of human rights.

The resolution demands an immediate cessation of the use of force, attacks on civilians and calls for end to siege of residential areas. Through the document the UN Security Council demanded “that all parties, in particular the Syrian authorities, promptly allow rapid, safe and unhindered humanitarian access”. The UN Security Council expressed its determination to take further action if the provisions of the resolution were not implemented.

Lithuania is contributing to the solution of the Syrian humanitarian crisis. This year Lithuania allocated the equivalent of 138 thousand Litas in humanitarian assistance to Syria. In the short run, Lithuania is going to accept refugees from Syria.
