Vice-Minister Mitkus: EU Ministers in Lviv expressed full support for Ukraine's EU accession path
On 10-11 December in Lviv, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigitas Mitkus attended an informal meeting of EU ministers for European affairs to discuss Ukraine's progress and next steps towards EU membership.
The meeting assessed Ukraine’s progress in implementing reforms, discussed the progress of technical EU accession negotiations, and set priorities for the first half of 2026. In the context of the annual Enlargement Package announced by the European Commission on 4 November 2025, significant progress by Ukraine was noted. Still, the need to further strengthen the fight against corruption was highlighted.
Mitkus emphasized that Lithuania has consistently supported and continues to support Ukraine's path to EU membership and that EU enlargement will be a priority during Lithuania's upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2027.
“The Ukrainian people demonstrate their determination to be part of Europe daily by defending their freedom and democracy. It is our duty to ensure that the negotiation process is transparent, swift, and results-oriented. Lithuania will continue to work actively to ensure that Ukraine's progress is properly assessed and supported," said the Vice-Minister.
According to Mitkus, this meeting sends an important political message to Ukraine, confirming the EU's readiness to continue supporting its accession path in a focused and united manner, as well as an opportunity for member states to directly assess the progress of the negotiations.
