Vice-Minister Plepytė emphasized the importance of transatlantic unity during her visit to Germany
On 19 March in Berlin, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Audra Plepytė met with Dr Géza von Geyr, State Secretary of the German Federal Foreign Office, to discuss the importance of transatlantic unity and NATO as the foundation for collective defence. The Vice-Minister expressed gratitude to Germany for its leadership in strengthening the security of Lithuania and the region, through the permanent deployment of a brigade in Lithuania and contributions to NATO’s collective defence and deterrence.
“We must maintain and increase our military, financial, and political support for Ukraine and its EU accession. At the same time, we need to ensure full pressure on Russia, especially amidst today's challenges," said the Vice-Minister.
The Vice-Minister and the State Secretary also discussed the situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region and its potential impact on European and global security.
Vice-Minister Plepytė stressed that ahead of the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, allies have to achieve significant progress in increasing defense spending and capabilities. In addition, NATO members must ensure continued military support for Ukraine.
The visit also included a discussion with representatives of the think tanks in Berlin, including DGAP (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik), EDINA (European Defence in A New Age), and SWP (Die Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik).
