Over the past few months, Europe has learnt that energy can be used as a severe tool of pressure for political purposes, said the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Rolandas Kriščiūnas in his address to the annual energy conference “Independent Energy – Strong Economy”.  

R.Kriščiūnas noted that energy supplies and the development of adequate energy infrastructure are as significant as never before.

“It is obvious that both Lithuania and other EU member states must strengthen cooperation in the field of energy with such countries as the U.S.A., Canada, Norway and Australia. The EU should support projects that open European energy market to new external energy suppliers from the Mediterranean and Caspian seas,” said the Vice-Minister.

R.Kriščiūnas noted that proposal for the EU Energy Union is not only about security and coordination, but also a new approach seeking cooperation between EU member states in dealing with energy-related issues. Lithuania welcomes this proposal, since it is based on fundamental principles that are of major significance to energy security - solidarity and trust in other member states, coordination, joint investment, development of true energy market and speaking with one voice.

On 8 October in Vilnius, the magazine Valstybė (The State) organized the annual energy forum that brought together representatives of the authorities, politicians, Lithuanian and foreign energy experts, representatives of Lithuanian energy companies. They analysed key developments in the field of energy in Lithuania, Europe and the world, as well as their impact on the economy.
